Inpatient Program

Westend Hospital provides life-changing psychiatric treatment to adult and geriatric clients, ages 18 and above. Our inpatient program is designed to provide intensive comprehensive care to individuals who have been struggling with a range of mental health disorders, including but not limited to major and mild neurocognitive disorder due to Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety disorders, dementia, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and depressive disorders.

Treatment in the inpatient program at Westend Hospital is provided by multidisciplinary teams of talented and dedicated professionals, including psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and mental health technicians. Clients also benefit from the services of a licensed dietician and a certified therapeutic recreational specialist.

After a thorough assessment and the development of an individualized treatment plan, individuals in the inpatient program participate in full days of structured and supervised therapy. Depending upon his or her specific needs, an individual’s experience in the inpatient program may include the following elements:

Medication management: Clients whose disorders may be treated with medication can receive effective and responsive medication management services while in treatment at Westend Hospital. Medication management clients will meet with a psychiatrist three times per week and will also have access to round-the-clock nursing supervision and care.

Individual therapy: Inpatient clients may be scheduled for individual therapy sessions on an as-needed basis. One-on-one sessions between a client and his or her therapist can provide invaluable opportunities for individuals to process successes and setbacks, discuss treatment-related issues, and address matters that the client may be unwilling or unable to bring up during group therapy sessions.

Group therapy: Group therapy is a foundational element of the inpatient treatment experience at Westend Hospital. Group sessions, which are held multiple times each day, may be led by a nurse, social worker, or activity therapist. The following are among the general topics that may be addressed during group therapy sessions:

  • Anger management
  • Coping skills
  • Grief therapy
  • Medication compliance and management
  • Relapse prevention
  • Stress management

Family therapy: As is the case with inpatient therapy, clients and their families may request family therapy sessions on an as-needed basis. Conducted by an experienced social worker, family therapy sessions allow loved ones to address personal concerns, strengthen familial bonds, and learn how best to support the client’s continued healing after he or she has returned home.

Activity therapy: Activity therapy within the parameters of the inpatient program at Westend Hospital involves a number of innovative and interactive techniques that can help individuals make the healthiest and most productive use of leisure time, and can provide clients with new skills that they can develop and enjoy long after they have returned home.

The typical length of stay in the inpatient program at Westend Hospital is seven to nine days, though the actual amount of time that any individual will remain in treatment will be determined based upon his or her unique strengths, needs, and treatment objectives.
